Leisure, Tourism & Sport

Started in the last five weeks of Year 1 and finished in the first four weeks of Year 2. Central Florida is on the doorstep, so the case study material is unusually close to hand.

§ 01

The four-part sequence

Taught in this order. Each part builds the evidence base the next one argues with.

  1. Changing leisure patterns
How participation in leisure, tourism and sport has changed with income, technology, ageing and time. Where the growth is, and where it has stalled.
  2. Tourism and sport at the local and national scale
Why destinations develop where they do: physical attractions, accessibility, investment, and the role of national policy and hosting bids.
  3. Tourism and sport at the international scale
Global flows, tourism as a development strategy, international sporting events, and the very uneven distribution of the money they generate.
  4. Managing tourism and sport for the future
Carrying capacity, sustainable tourism models, stakeholder conflict, and honest evaluation of management strategies.

On the extended response

Paper 1 gives each option one 10-mark extended response. For this theme, expect to evaluate tourism as a national development strategy — which means you need a country where it worked, a country where the benefits leaked out, and a reason for the difference.
